Today more and more infrastructure that used to be in your building is moving to the cloud, and as a result you are now having to acquire a lot less hardware. Depending on your point of view, this can be a good thing, bad thing, or it ultimately does not matter to you. Just as in life, there are many different types of thought processes on whether it is best to own your infrastructure, or trust others to host it for you. The most important thing is that you learn and understand the different options available to you and make the decision that is in your organization’s best interest and vision for the long term.
I will always do as much or little as a client wants, but ultimately, I want the decision to be one you are educated about and comfortable making. These days it is typically not cost effective to have in-house IT support unless you have over 100 employees. More often than not, all your IT needs can be managed by somebody outside of your organization for much cheaper than it would be to have a full-time employee on your payroll. In addition, it can be very difficult to find these types of employees that have much experience outside of regular desktop support, and you end up hiring somebody to make up for their shortcomings anyhow.
At the end of the day however, there is always some kind of infrastructure at your location that will require some type of management. Just because it has “worked fine for the last 10 years” does not mean that you aren’t carrying intrinsic risk that you may be unaware of at present. Part of my process is identifying all hardware and software you are currently using, whether it is up to date, and if not developing a path forward to ensure that it is. Many of these forgotten items are responsible for many compromises that organizations are facing today. Armor is historically ineffective if there are large parts missing, and many organizations these days tend to overlook the small stuff.
Working together we will build a plan for all items in your infrastructure, when to replace them, update them, and making sure that all available security updates are applied on a regular and timely basis. I set this up as a transparent process, so you can understand the true cost of the items you are investing in, why things cost what they do, and when and why items will need to be replaced. Please see below list for an example of supported items:
- Firewalls and Routers
- Network Switches
- PC’s and Laptops
- Servers
- Hypervisors
- SAN or NAS Storage
- Load Balancers
- Wireless Networking
- IOT Devices
